William Spence Pottery . History
Approx. 1869 - 1881
Grey Township, Huron County
Ethel, Ontario.

Typed from Grey Township & It.s people (1982) Page 153.

STORM SURVEY: James Spence (wife Janis), a Scotchman and his son William (wife Martha Thompkins), who came from the Paris area, chose this as their home in 1867 or 1868, purchasing lots in the Storm Survey in 1869. James chose lot 1 and 2 and erected a building on the NE corner of lot 1. The front area was the general store and the post office, while James occupied the rear and upstairs. He was appointed Postmaster in 1869. On lot 2 at the NW side and right behind his house, James had a stable.

LOT 9 & 10: William, his son, chose lot 9 and 10. On lot 10, to the NE corner and along Main Street, he built a small frame house comprising of a kitchen, parlor and three bedrooms . no upstairs. In approximately 1870, he built a pottery on the NW corner of this lot. William & Martha had a family of James, Rebecca, Laura, William T. William T had polio in both arms when he was about three years old leaving his right arm somewhat useless.

Laura Spence (Mrs. George Krauter) in 1968 recorded the following notes about her father.s pottery business, which was a very good trade in the 1880.s. To get the clay needed William bought a lot on the west side of the gravel road south of Brussels, not far from the cemetery. A pond still remains to mark the spot. The clay was drawn back to Ethel in large chunks with horse and wagon. This clay had to be ground very fine, and to do so William used a barrel-like container with large knives inside, which worked on the same principal as a meat grinder. The grinder was run by horse-power, and as the clay was ground it dropped down into a box positioned below. All the small stones had to be picked out and the clay weighed for each item being made and then it was shaped into flat balls, for the making of flower pots, milkpans, fruit jars, crocks of all sizes, dash churns and for many other household articles.

The shop had a large bench, where the potter.s large wheel was located. It was started by kicking a paddle with his foot. The wheel went very fast and the trick was to put balls of wet clay on the exact center of the wheel as it was going around. The pieces were all shaped with the hand and when finished were taken from the wheel and put on a board to dry in a warm place. After they were dry they were dipped in a red lead mixed with water and left to dry again, whether more than one coat was applied it is not known.

Behind the shop was a large kiln with a tall chimney, where two large brick fireplaces burned wood slabs. The pottery items were all placed in the kiln and burned and glazed for two or three days and nights. When the pieces came out of the kiln they were ready for market and were taken to Seaforth as there was no railway here. Flower pots were neither burned or glazed.

After James. death in 1880, William carried on the store and was appointed Postmaster in 1882. William built a small room to his house to accommodate the post office and the telegraph office.

William was appointed clerk treasurer in 1880. Because of his appointments, he gave up his pottery business. The pottery building which now had been used for a number of years for a horse table was torn down.

Typed from Early Ontario Potters: Their craft and trade . David L. Newlands.

Page 87: William Spence is listed in an 1865 directory as working in Hollen, Maryborough Township, Wellington County.

Page 120: Fig. 11.3 A plan of Ethel, dated February 1869, showing the location of the pottery building at the intersection of Main and Arthur Streets.

Ethel: In 1869, William Spence purchased lots 9 and 10 at the southeastern corner of the intersection of Main and Arthur Streets in the Village of Ethel. Spence is reported to have continued in the pottery business until 1881. After that date he was the village postmaster. Nothing more is known at this time about Spence or the pottery he produced at his workshop.
